Divisibility Rules

Hello Children,
I am so sorry that I have not been with you at school these past few days so, to let you know you are certainly not forgotten, I am adding some materials on the blog to support you with maths!!
Have fun learning!
Miss Noelle

A quick review
I know your teachers have been reviewing these ideas in class, you will also have notes & handouts in your maths notebook but just in case you have a doubt lets review!!!

What is a divisibility rule?
A divisibility rule is a little fact or group of facts based on things we have already learned ( like our mulitplication tables), that can help us to divide large numbers without doing huge calculations. It can be so easy some might call it a trick:)

Why should we have to learn them?
We should learn them to excersise what we already know and to save us the time and possible mistakes we can make by doing large math calculations.

I hope you find this helpful!!
See you soon!

GEOMETRY

Hello children,
As you know this unit of maths is all related to geometry!!  We will give you are few examples of our in-class topics, right here on the blog to support your learning.
Remember, not only can you find geometry in the classroom or on the blog, you can find it in everyday life!!
After reviewing these contents, think for a moment about where you may have come across these concepts before!!
Have fun learning!!!

What is Symmetry?  Reflection?  Rotation? Translation? and Tesselation?
Lets find out!!

Symmetry is when you put an invisible line through the middle of an object and both sides match or when an object can be divided exactly into two halves by creating a line with a mirror. (Please click on the title to access video.)

If you used a mirror would you be able to divide this face exactly in half?

Are you able to use a mirror here to divide each shape exactly in half?

Reflection or (Flip)- Reflection takes place when a shape is flipped across a line and faces the opposite direction. Because the shape ends up facing the opposite direction, it appears to be reflected, as in a mirror. Hence the name REFLECTION. (Please click on the title to get access to video.)

Can you flip each shape perfectly across the line?

Rotation is a transformation that turns a figure about a fixed point. Rotation is also called as turn. The fixed point around which a figure is rotated is called as centre of rotation. (Please click on the title to access video)

If you choose a point on any one of these green triangles & rotate it, will it follow the path of this shape?

Quick comparison below...

(Please click on diagram for video)

Translation simply means Moving... without rotating, resizing or anything else, just moving.
Every point of the shape must move the same distance  and in the same direction!! (Please click on title to access video clip.)

Can you see how the shapes are exactly the same but just moved around the grid?

Tesselation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. (Please click on the title to get video)

Are there any gaps or overlaps in this picture?

How many of you have ever seen a floor like this?  Do the tiles overlap?  Are there any gaps in the placement of tiles?
(Children, if you have any doubts or concerns regarding any of these topics please stop & see any of your teachers!)
 Thanks!!  Miss Noelle

MIGRATION

Migration
This topic of natural science is proving to be very diverse this unit!!  We have started a mould investigation, today we will start to observe and recreate different ecosystems and now we need to begin the topic of migration?
Please do the following questions as an eHW and place the answers in your natural science notebook.

Our class list of animals we have decided to research are as follows,
Bank Swallow, Guanaco, Humbolt Penguin, Eastern Kingbird, Osprey, White Solitary Sandpiper, Rumped Solitary Sandpiper, Summer Tanager, Pink Footed Shearwater and Southern Right Whales.

1. What is migration?
2. Why do animals migrate?  Do they migrate alone or in groups and why?
3. How do animals know that they should migrate?
4. After researching your animal which path of migration do they follow?  What time of year do the travel?
5. Are there any dangers in migration?
6. What other interesting facts did you learn about your animals migrating habits?

Have fun learning!!

ECOSYSTEM REVIEW

What is an Ecosystem?

Today we will venture out into nature to observe ecosystems near our school & to try & extract small elements to recreate a small ecosystem for our classroom.  Please pay attention to this review to help you be ready in your exploration & daily observations!!
Thanks & have fun learning!!
Miss Noelle
An ecosystem is a complex set of relationships among the living resources, habitats, and residents of an area. It includes plants, trees, animals, fish, birds, microrganisms, water, soil, and people. When an ecosystem is healthy, scientists say it is sustainable. This means that all the elements live in balance and are capable of reproducing themselves. There is usually biodiversity, meaning that there are a variety of living organisms and species in that environment.

5A Mould Investigation eHW

eHw: Mould Investigation

Hey kids,
You really must investigate this topic as you will be exploring mould much more during these coming weeks as scientists investigating your own experiment with bread & in nature.
Thanks,
                                                    Miss Noelle

1. What is mould? Where does it come from?
2. Why does mould grow?
3. What conditions does mould need to grow?
4. Where have you seen mould?  Where does it grow? (Think about inside your home, your refridgerator & in your garden!!)

Have fun investigating!!!
